Dog Food Label - Reading Between The Lies

Reading The Dog Food Label - Understanding Dog Food Labels

How much do you love your dog? A pretty silly question, don't you think? You're taking time out of your busy day to read information on the canine breed right now. So I know how much your dog means to you. So doesn't it make sense, then, that you'd select food for your dog that we know to be healthy and nutritionally sound?

Let me ask you, do you know the difference between the dog food label "Chicken Dog Food" and "Dog Food With Chicken"? What is the difference, you ask? About 22%. "Chicken Dog Food" has to have at least 25% chicken in the can, while "Dog Food With Chicken" has to only have 3% of chicken included in your dogs dinner delight!!

And the dog food manufacturers seem to be putting a lot of time, effort and money into convincing us that their products are natural and nutritionally sound with marketing gimmicks and eye-catching claims that tell us what we want to hear.

Don't spend extra money on dog food simply because "premium" is part of the description of the dog food. Products labled as "premium," "super-premium", "ultra-premium" or "gourmet" do not contain any different or higher quality ingredients, nor are they held up to any higher nutritional standards than are any other complete and balanced product.

The same way the dog food labeled with the term "natural" has little to no meaning. So I wouldn't be tempted by that term either. It can be the equivalent to a lack of artificial flavors, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives in the product.

Now that I have you a little more concerned about label reading, remember that all ingredients are to be listed in order of predominance by weigh. You will want MEAT to be the first on the list...followed by an absorbable grain, such as rice. Anything else is just not good enough for your pet!! A very simple rule to follow. I hope this information will have you spending a little more time in the dog food aisle from now on, reading what you're feeding your dog. And I have only touched a few of the highlights on this topic, you can read much more by following the link below.

Keeping A Dog Fit Without Dog Food

Calorie Requirements For A Dog - What Not To Feed Your Dog

If you seen the results from several canned dog food investigations, you may have decided that you can do a better job feeding your dog food that you have prepared for them. But feeding a balanced diet may be harder to calculate than you may think. Let me give you a few things to consider before taking on this huge responsibility.

How much is too much? When it comes to keeping your dog fit and not overweight, you will need to consider how much you need to feed your dog. It all comes down to calories...the same way it is for the rest of us. In order for us to maintain our weight, and not gain pounds, we have to stick with the correct calorie recommendations for our body type, and size.

This is the same guideline we need to follow with our own dog. The average calorie requirement is 30 calories per pound of body weight per day to maintain their current body weight. A smaller active dog under 20 pounds can use up to 40 calories per pound per day. While a large dog over 50 pounds can get by with as little as 20 calories per pound per day.

But there are many factors to consider when determining the right amount of caloric intake for your dog. Inactive dogs or neutered dog in hot climates require less calories, while a working dog, herding dog, or one that spends the majority of their day outside may require above the average amount of calories.

Your dogs individual metabolism, exercise, age, environment and overall health will all help to determine what your dog really needs to remain lean and healthy. If your dog is overweight, increase his exercise, and decrease the calorie intake. A good rule of thumb would be to keep their calories at 60% of the normal requirement.

A complete chart of the "Caloric Requirements" for dogs based on these various needs...as well as recommendations for feeding your dog a balanced diet can be found when following the link below. It may surprise you when you see what food is good for your dog, and what food you should NEVER feed your dog.

Dog Biscuits - Dogs Love 'Em

Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes - Puppy Nutrition

If you have a dog, I'm sure you have spent plenty of time in the doggie aisle of WalMart, Target, or your favorite pet store searching for the perfect dog treat to give your dog upon your return home. Because they certainly deserve a treat for staying home, wouldn't you agree? But did you ever stop and think that you may be doing your dog more harm than good by giving them a dog biscuit sold off the shelf. You really have no idea what you are really feeding them, or how much fat you are feeding them.

The logical solution to this problem would be to make the biscuit yourself! Now you will know exactly what ingredients are in the homemade treat you are feeding them. As long as you remember that a treat is just that...a treat. Like an Oreo cookie is just an Oreo cookie. But let's not make a meal out of it! Although, the recipe I am about to share with you is much more healthy than that Oreo cookie you treated yourself with.

Biscuits For Dogs

• 1 cup oatmeal – uncooked
• 1/3 cup margarine
• 1 tablespoon beef bouillon granules
• 5 1/2 cups hot water
• 1 tablespoon garlic powder -- optional
• 3/4 cup powdered milk
• 3/4 cup cornmeal
• 3 cups whole wheat flour
• 1 whole egg -- beaten

Pour hot water over oatmeal, margarine, and bouillon; let stand for 6 min.
Stir in milk, cornmeal, and egg. Add flour, 1/2 c. at a time; mix well after each addition. Knead 3 - 4 min., adding more flour it necessary to make a very STIFF dough. Roll or pat dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut into dog bone shapes with cookie cutter.
Bake at 325 degrees for 50 min. on baking parchment Allow to cool and dry out until hard.
Store in container.

I hope you will discover how easy this is. How you will also be saving yourself money, and giving your dog a treat that is much better for them. To get more great receipes for homemade dog food meals, and dog treats, follow the link below.
